FTP Setup
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) allows you to manage the files on your website. There are a wide range of programs available, from free downloadable software to store-bought discs. Regardless of which program you choose to use, all will have the same general setup. To get started, you will need your site's host address (ft.yourdomain.com), username, and password.
Reminder: These are just the basic steps that should help get you started but some will differ slightly from program to program.
- Open the program and navigate to File -> New -> Site Profile
(if you don't find any similar options, look for Connect or a space to fill out your site's ftp login information)
- A new window will open where you can fill out your site's ftp login information:
- Name: Site's Name
- Address: ftp.yourdomain.com
- Username: site username
- Password: site password
- Click Okay.
- The window will disappear and your site will now be added to a list of ftp setup websites. Click on your listed site and navigate to the folders/files
you'd like to update.
(does not apply to quick connect setups, for these you'll be immediately connected to your site which may or may not be saved in a list of setup websites - this depends on the program you're using)
- Note: Typically, right clicking in an area will offer more options such as "download", "upload", etc.
When in doubt for any program software, find Help on your File Menu (usually the last option at the top of your program's screen).
